Twitter is something I’ve been on for a few years now, but only now do I really find it of use because it is really starting to get interesting. People I know who aren’t specifically tech savvy (yes, you know who you are!) are now joining, news and views are flowing on the network before even the blogosphere, and there are a whole host of tools available to play with (thanks to Twitter opening its API). The time is very much now, also as a PR/comms tool.

I was going to do a post all about the service, but it seems there isn’t really much of a need as Mr Neville Hobson has done one along the same idea, hey ho. I would say this though…the site still needs to work on a few things before we mass adoption to the levels of Facebook or even LinkedIn, such as the ability to split out contacts into groups or a directory of applications you can use to improve your experience, but I’m sure these will all happen in time. In my opinion the site owners need to start doing this otherwise its adopters will look elsewhere such as FriendFeed – for example, one such rebellion from Hugh MacLeod’s might not be a lone example. Clutter has never been good, especially in the Spring.

Here a graph that shows off the Twitterrific rise…

Some tools worth looking at…Summize, Tweetscan, Twitlinks, TweetStats, TwitterLocal, Twubble, Quotably, Twittersearch, GroupTweet. More, I’m sure, will follow!

  1. Bryan Ferry – Legend. I am loving twitter, takes up more of my time than FB. Also, spotted your post via Twitter rather than bloglines…awesome.

  2. Twitter is definitely the first port of call now, perhaps more than my RSS reader. It is simply so easy for people to engage with, which is why I think you will get people on Twitter who aren’t necessarily bloggers…that must be a good thing.
